ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

A. DIRECT ADMISSION
(a) For direct admission, the applicant must have obtained one of the following:-
i)      550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version)
ii)     Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training)
iii)    79-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test (Academic Version)
iv)    213 for TOEFL Computer-based Test (Academic Version).

(b) An applicant applying into the Malay Language Studies, Arabic or Chinese Literature programme or any modern language programme that allows a thesis to be written in the language of instruction, must have obtained one of the following:-
i)      450 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version)
ii)     Band 5.0 for IELTS (Academic Training).

(c) Applicant from the following GLC university shall also be exempted from the requirement
  1. UNITEN
  2. MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY
  3. UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS

The validity period for requirement should not be more than five (5) years. TOEFL ITP is not an acceptable alternative.
Note: An exemption from the English Language proficiency requirement may be given to the following:

i)    An applicant who has obtained a degree from any public university in Malaysia shall not be subject to the English Language proficiency requirement.
ii)    An applicant for a Masters degree programme who has undergone his secondary school and Bachelor degree education in the English language shall be exempted from the requirement.  Application for exemption must be accompanied by supporting documents that have been certified by the relevant certificate-issuing bodies.
iii)    An applicant for the PhD degree programme who has undergone his secondary school, and Bachelor and Masters degree education in the English language shall also be exempted from the requirement.  Application for exemption must be accompanied by supporting documents that have been certified by the relevant certificate-issuing bodies.
iv)    Applicant from the following non native English speaking countries. This exemption however may be revised from time to time without prior notice.
  • Fiji
  • Gambia
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Maldives
  • Mauritius
  • Nigeria
  • Philippine
  • Sierra Leone
  • Singapore
  • Swaziland
  • Tanzania
  • Uganda

B. PROVISIONAL ADMISSION
A provisional admission is given to the following:
i)    An applicant who meets the academic requirement of the study programme but did not submit proof of his English language proficiency at the time of application.  He must provide evidence of having met at least the minimum score of 500 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version) or 173 for Computer  - based or 61 for Internet - based, or Band 5.5 for IELTS (Academic Training) at the time of registration.  TOEFL ITP is not an acceptable alternative.

ii)    Obtain a score of 500-549 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version); or

iii)   Band 5.5 for IELTS (Academic Training), for any degree programme EXCEPT for programmes (with and without thesis) in the fields of study as shown below:-
(a)   English Language
(b)   English Literature
(c)   Applied Linguistic
(d)   World Literature
(e)   Discourse Studies
(f)    Applied Comparative Linguistics
(g)   Cultural and Literacy Studies
(h)   Translation and Interpretation
(i)     Literacy Studies
(j)     Teaching of English as a Second Language
An applicant who obtains a score of 500-549 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version) or its equivalent, or Band 5.5 for IELTS (Academic Training) at the time of registration shall be required to enroll and pass the Tertiary English Programme (TEP) (in addition to the academic courses) offered by the University.  The fee structure for the TEP is shown below.

C. NON-GRADUATING

An applicant who:

(a) Obtain below than:-

i)    500 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version); or

ii)   Band 5.5 for IELTS (Academic Training); or

(b) Face difficulties in taking either the TOEFL or IELTS test in own country, may apply to join our Non-Graduating Programme for a period of 6 months (one semester).

It is important to note that during the Non-Graduating Programme period, you are not allowed to take any academic courses apart from the English Course.

Fees for the Non-Graduating Programme (to be paid at the School of Graduate Studies upon registration) are as follow:-

Non-Graduating Programme Fee RM1,200.00
Health Insurance (subject to change from time to time) RM   315.60
Sub total RM1,515.60

You are advised to sit for a placement test to determine your level of English proficiency. Contact UPM Education and Training (UPMET) for the placement test detail and schedule.

A score of 109 will allow you Full Admission.

A score of 107 will enable you a Provisional Admission status which will allow you to enroll in the TEP or CIEP programme, depending on your preference. You may also sit for the IELTS or TOEFL test on your own.

If you obtain a score of level below 107, you may enroll in the Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP), manage by UPM Education & Training (UPMET). Click here for details and fees of the Certified Intensive English Programme. You may also study English with other providers to prepare you to sit for the IELTS or TOEFL test on your own.
